Know Your Options Before You Make Any Decisions

Divorce can be tricky on its own, and when you factor in the discussion of raising a shared child (or children), splitting up can be a struggle. When you and your former partner decide that it is time to end things, make sure that you speak with a qualified attorney before you make any promises. You want to know your rights and responsibilities before, during, and after your custody negotiations.

Understanding the custody laws of the state of Connecticut is just your first step in custody, and a trusted attorney can help you along each step of the way. By having the information you need, you can make better decisions for the future of your family. If you have been playing it by ear, now is a good time to speak with legal counsel about your options.

A Parenting Plan Can Stipulate Important Family Choices

When negotiating custody with the other parent, you have a way that you can put your rights and responsibilities on paper. This is called a parenting plan, and it helps the family to come to terms regarding some important decisions, such as medical care, religious upbringing, and more.

Here in the state of Connecticut, parenting plans have significant sway in the eyes of the court. Your judge will still need to approve yours, but this can be a positive way to agree on certain things with the other parent.
