Your Attorney Can Help You Understand Divorce

When you decide that it is time to end your marriage, it can be a confusing and overwhelming situation. This can sometimes lead people to stay in their relationship long after it has naturally come to an end. This is one of the reasons why is it so helpful to speak with a trusted divorce attorney to understand the steps.

There are serious ramifications to divorcing your partner, and this starts with a discussion of separating finances between you two. Here in the state of Connecticut, we are what is called an “equitable division” state, meaning that all assets and liabilities must be split in a way that provides a reasonable amount of fairness. This differs from a community property state, which says that half must go to each partner.

Benefit By Having Your Advocate By Your Side

Even amicable divorces can sometimes become difficult when negotiations start. For this reason, it is important to find a divorce attorney who can be not just knowledgeable, but also be your advocate during the process. If you try to go it alone, you could find yourself at one end of the table, facing off against a skilled negotiating team. When these discussions include serious topics like your finances and any shared children, it is important to have someone who has your back.
